The Senate is one part of the Congress. It is made up of 100 senators. There are two senators from each state, regardless of the state's size or population. Senators are elected and serve six year terms. Their terms are staggered so that not all the senators are reelected at once. Each senator gets one vote when voting on issues.
To be a Senator, a person must be at least 30 years old, be an American citizen and a resident of the state that he/she is representing.
The president of the Senate is the Vice-president of the United States. He casts the deciding vote if the Senate is tied when voting on an issue.
Other leaders include the president pro temporare, the Senate Majority Leader, the Senate Minority leader, the Senate Whip.
